Judge Overseeing Gang-Rape Cases of Slain LSU student Madison Brooks is the Mother of Convicted Serial Rapist

by Jail The Judges Team | Aug 8, 2026 | Judicial Immunity, Supreme Court

LOUISIANA: The black judge overseeing the gang-rape cases of slain white LSU student Madison Brooks is the mother of a convicted serial rapist.

Judge Gail Horne Ray’s son, Nelson Taylor, pleaded guilty in 1997 to multiple forcible r*pes of teenage girls.

She served as one of his defense attorneys.

She is now set to decide the fate of the black men accused of raping 19-year-old Madison Brooks before the young woman was dumped on a highway and killed.

Prosecutors sought to remove Ray from the cases, citing her son’s history and text messages from one defendant suggesting she would be sympathetic.

Lower courts ordered her recusal. The Louisiana Supreme Court reversed those decisions and kept her on the bench.

This is not a minor appearance issue. A judge whose own son was a serial rapist, and who personally defended him, is now presiding over a high-profile interracial rape and death case involving a white victim.

Justice for Madison Brooks should not rest in these hands.

Judicial Misconduct - Reversal of Rape Conviction

Baton Rouge Judge Gail Horne Ray has been under investigation for misconduct after tossing out a man's 1973 rape conviction without allowing prosecutors to argue against dropping the life sentence.

Louisiana Supreme Court later overruled Ray, because she had no authority to do that.

The state Judiciary Commission which handles complaints against judges said Ray failed to do "any meaningful work" in a client's case before dropping him. That misconduct allegation stems from Ray’s work as a defense attorney before she was elected judge.

Conclusion

How can a judge who seemingly protects rapists be allowed to rule in gang-rape cases?
