PORTLAND, OR: A documented pattern of escalating domestic violence ended in the murder of a mother of three. Prosecutors say Mohamed Adan should never have been free to reoffend, and it cost a life.

Pattern of Violence
The murder of Racheal Abraham in August 2022 began with a pattern of violence that prosecutors say should have been impossible to miss, and we agree.
Racheal Abraham reported that she feared for her life, but her cries for help were ignored after she was severely beaten more than once.
Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Angela Lucero (below) set the bail at only $20,000 on August 11, 2022, after Mohamed Osman Adan was arrested for violating a no-contact order and contempt of court for his continued violations/assaults.
"It was 6 a.m., and Rachael had a new black eye as she told officers she believed she was going to die." according to the Washington Examiner (link below).
Then, the Portland Freedom Fund, now defunct organization connected to defund the police movement, paid the $2,000 toward Mohamed Adan’s $20,000 bail, and only 5 days later Racheal Abraham was murdered.
On December 30, 2025, Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Jenna Plank sentenced Mohamed Osman Adan to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Mohamed Adan plead guilty to 2nd degree murder for the brutal killing of his domestic partner and the mother of his children, Racheal Abraham.

Nathan Vasquez's Sharp Criticism
Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez sharply criticized the decision to release Mohamed Adan.
“I am sickened and outraged that this group chose to bail out the defendant,” Vasquez said. “That reckless decision had real world consequences.”
According to prosecutors, those consequences were fatal.
What do you think? Did the system fail Racheal Abraham? What about her children who witnessed it?
Timeline Before Murder in Portland
The worst part about this case is that everyone could see it, that is, except the Judge who set bail at only $20,000 when a life was on the line.
May 2, 2022
Racheal Abraham reported that Mohamed Adan punched her twice in the head while intoxicated and angry.
June 23, 2022
Police responded after Adan allegedly violated a restraining order, entered Abraham's apartment, broke her phone, strangled her multiple times, punched her, and threatened her.
Abraham warned the court:
“Statistics show that strangulation cases lead to homicide. I don’t want to be a victim.”
Late June 2022
Adan was released under court supervision with a GPS monitor and other conditions.
July 27, 2022
Prosecutors say Adan returned to the restricted address and later cut off his GPS monitor.
A warrant was requested for his arrest.
August 11, 2022
Adan was arrested again after Abraham reported that he entered the apartment, covered her mouth, and beat her with prayer beads.
August 2022
Judge Angela Lucero set Mohamed Adan's bail at only $20,000. Defense counsel requested to lower the bail further to $1,000 which was denied by Judge Jerry Hodson.
August 22, 2022
The Portland Freedom Fund paid $2,000 to release Mohamed Adan (standard 10% required to release).
Five Days Later
Prosecutors say Adan cut off his GPS monitor, returned to the apartment, and murdered Racheal Abraham with their three (3) children present.
December 30, 2025
Mohamed Adan pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
December 31, 2025
The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office released additional details about the case and announced that the remaining $18,000 in bail would be forfeited for restitution.

The Portland Freedom Fund Said It "Learned" From the Tragedy
The Portland Freedom Fund did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the latest sentencing.
Later in 2022, Terrence Hayes, who sat on the board of The Portland Freedom Fund, discussed the case on OPB's “Think Out Loud” where he said, “It’s a horrific lesson learned for us, but we are trying to grow and develop.”
Yep, Terrence Hayes said they were "learning" from the murder and needed to "change how it evaluated people" to bail out, which is clearly obvious.
Children are without their mother and they are OK "learning" from it?
In an OPB article, Terrence Hayes was asked "why the Portland Freedom Fund decided last month to help Mohamad Adan post bail, who then a week later, allegedly murdered Rachel Abraham, the mother of his children:
I think we’re okay with recognizing that in doing the work that we do every day that something horrific like this happened."
Who supported The Portland Freedom Fund?
After so basic research, we found that Queen's Bench, the Multnomah County Chapter of Oregon Women Lawyers (OWLS), is hosting what appears to be an older Portland Freedom Fund presentation.
In the presentation you can clearly see that after attempting bail for 23 people, four (4) of them failed to appear and three (3) were convicted.
With only 3 dismissals, and one mother paying the ultimate price, do you think it was worth it?

Ability to Pay
The ability to pay should never be the only factor considered when a person has clearly shown a serious escalating threat. However, even the Oregon DOJ requires a payment method just to file a motion online in family courts.
The murder of Racheal Abraham has become a painful example of how money influences the so-called "justice" system.
The painful reality is that The Portland Freedom Fund should have never paid for Mohamed Aden to be released. This can make you wonder, where are these organizations getting the support to release criminals? Great question...

OWLS Mission "To transform the legal profession by pursuing equitable access to the legal system and equity for women and communities who are systemically oppressed."

The Remaining $18,000 in Bail
As part of the resolution of the case, prosecutors asked the court to order forfeiture of the remaining $18,000 of Adan's outstanding bail.
The court ordered the money to be forfeited.
The funds are intended to go toward restitution, including helping Abraham's children and family cope with the aftermath of her murder.
According to prosecutors, the Portland Freedom Fund's founder, Amanda Trujillo, had signed the original bail paperwork at the time.
A Case That Raises Difficult Questions
The murder of Racheal Abraham is not simply a story about a criminal who was eventually sentenced to life in prison.
It is also a story about the warning signs that came before the murder.
It is a story about a woman who told the court she was afraid.
It is a story about a documented pattern of escalating violence.
It is a story about repeated violations of court orders and GPS monitoring.
It is a story about a man who was repeatedly arrested and released by toxic extremists groups enabled by Judges who set bail too low, or in some cases releases them without bail.
And it is a story about the consequences of decisions made by courts, supervision systems, advocacy organizations, and individuals who all had a role in what happened next.
Racheal Abraham told the court she did not want to become a victim.
She was right to be afraid.
As Melissa Marrero said at sentencing,
“Racheal deserved better. Her children deserved better. She should be here with us today.”
About Judge Angela Franco Lucero
Angela Franco Lucero was appointed to be a Judge in Multnomah County Circuit Court by Governor Kate Brown, the toxic empathy Queen preceding Oregon's current disaster of a Governor Tina Kotek.
Governor Kate Brown said that Angela Franco Lucero's "empathy for those who appear before her will serve her well as a trial court judge.”
We can agree to disagree on that.
If a Judge is so "empathetic" that they basically let a violent repeat offender go by ruling such a low bail, do you think they should be a Judge? Or, is that toxic empathy seeping into the bench?
"Free" Support
What even more sad about this story is the sheer number of people involved, and the amount of resources available that all failed because a criminal was released, or did they fail?
Think about. Everyone involved gets paid and the State now has more children in their "care" system so are the Judges in on the rackets many have alleged for year (cough Nancy Shaffer, cough).
